It’s been a rollercoaster of a story for Blake Jarrell, having been one of the many people who lost his home to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 Blake Jarrell had to start over in Chicago. His feeling of loss was comforted by the thumping Chicago dance sounds in which Blake heard his calling and after handing over a demo of his production skills to Armin van Buuren himself, Blake Jarrell got the call!
The following two years were a manic whirlwind (no puns intended!) of global touring where Blake Jarrell adjusted to the full time lifestyle of a global in-demand DJ and producer and like any DJ and producer artist, finding the balance between touring and spending time in the studio is always a challenge. Blake Jarrell decided to put the touring on hold while he took an inspirationally obsessed month of being locked up in his studio, the result of which is his new album ‘Concentrate 2009′.
The album consists of a 2 discs, the first of which is a mix compilation of Blake Jarrell’s new and current remixes to which Blake tells us “I didn’t want to put out just another DJ-mixed compilation. I remembered an album of remixes where each remix was specially designed to fit one another in such a way that it not only makes sense as a traditional DJ-mixed set, but as an intricately customized story. The idea always intrigued me, but it wasn’t until now that it dawned on me that I had the perfect set of songs for such a project. I immediately fell in love with the concept and became obsessed with it, locking myself in the studio.”
There is a wonderfully calm and uplifting spirit sewn throughout the first disc, a journey that will leave you smiling from ear to ear. Highlights of the disc include the melodious and melancholy ‘Bittersweet Nightshade’ from Mike Foyle, the laidback and dreamy ‘Let It Go’ by Gabriel & Dresden featuring the vocals of Molly Bancro who finds the same success in this track as she did with Gabriel & Dresden in ‘Tracking Treasure Down’. Other highlights include Jerome Isma-Mae’s progressive tech trancer ‘Smile When You Kill Me’ and the excellent Kyau & Albert ‘Walk Down’ all in the Blake Jarrell remix of course! Blake comments “Within each remix is also a smaller story. I chose to remix these songs because each of the original versions spoke to me either as a DJ, a producer, or as a person.”
Just as his discovery by Armin van Buuren came at the right time in his sky rocketing career, it seems as though ‘Concentrate 2009′ has come at the perfect interlude to Blake Jarrell’s still growing career and if this is just the beginning for Blake we can expect a lot more from this young artist.
